Understand the treatment. Read the context.

Six treatment overviews and eight selected studies. Findings depend on who was studied and which treatment was used for comparison.

This is a selected reading guide, not a new systematic review or a clinician-reviewed guideline. Summary labels are not formal GRADE ratings and do not establish the outcomes of individual institutions.
FOUR TREATMENTS · BETTER QUESTIONS

Narrow your provider search to four treatments.

Check service descriptions, the actual clinician, eligibility and research in that order. Counts below describe collection coverage in the current 126-provider directory.

Discuss medicines, pregnancy and previous reactions with your clinician. These editorial questions support preparation for a visit and are not diagnostic or treatment instructions.

Acupuncture

Fine needles stimulate specific points on the body. Findings can differ between manual acupuncture and electroacupuncture.

Sterile, single-use needles and appropriate practice matter. Bleeding, infection and other complications can occur.

Chuna manual therapy 추나

A practitioner uses hands or supporting equipment to mobilize the body. Read evidence for the particular condition studied.

Findings in chronic neck pain cannot be generalized to every spinal disorder or patient.

Herbal medicine 한약

Formulas and preparations vary. Assess evidence by the specific formula, ingredients, dose and condition.

Tell your clinician about other medicines, liver or kidney disease, and pregnancy. Natural does not automatically mean safe.

Source ↗

Pharmacopuncture 약침

Injection of a preparation at selected sites. Ingredients and techniques vary; ultrasound-guided findings do not apply to all injections.

Ask about the ingredients, intended benefit, adverse reactions and alternatives.

Source ↗

Moxibustion

Treatment using heat stimulation. Direct, indirect and electronic methods have different evidence and risks.

Consider burns and other adverse events, and whether studies reported them adequately.

Source ↗

Cupping 부항

Cups create negative pressure. Dry cupping and wet cupping, which involves skin puncture, should be considered separately.

Persistent skin discoloration, burns and infection can occur. Procedures involving bleeding carry additional risks.

Acupuncture for chronic pain

Benefits observed · comparator matters

Between-group differences were about 0.5 standard deviations versus no acupuncture and 0.2 versus sham. The comparator affects the apparent size of the benefit.

Population
Chronic musculoskeletal pain, osteoarthritis, chronic headache or shoulder pain
Comparator
Sham acupuncture or no-acupuncture control
Size
39 trials · 20,827 participants
Authors · Publication year
Vickers et al. · 2018
Limitations & interpretation
Trials were published through the end of 2015. Results span multiple conditions and do not establish the performance of any particular hospital or clinician.

Acupuncture for chronic nonspecific low back pain

Effect size and certainty are limited

Versus usual care, the immediate pain difference was about 10.3 points on a 100-point scale, which the review judged not clinically important.

Population
People with chronic nonspecific low back pain
Comparator
Sham acupuncture, no treatment or usual care
Size
33 trials · 8,270 participants
Authors · Publication year

Limitations & interpretation
Certainty varies by comparator and outcome. Statistical significance does not necessarily imply a meaningful improvement for patients.

Acupuncture for episodic migraine prevention

Prevention evidence reviewed

The review compared acupuncture with different controls for migraine prevention, focusing on the frequency of attacks.

Population
People with episodic migraine
Comparator

Size
22 trials · 4,985 participants
Authors · Publication year
Linde et al. · 2016
Limitations & interpretation
This is not evidence for stopping an acute attack or for every type of headache. Published in 2016; subsequent studies and guidance should also be considered.

Chuna for chronic neck pain

Benefit observed in one clinical trial

At 5 weeks, the difference in pain improvement favored Chuna by 16.8 mm on a 100-mm scale (95% CI 10.1–23.5).

Population
Nonspecific neck pain lasting at least 3 months
Comparator
